Simon O'Rourke

I'm a chainsaw artist, a wood sculptor, a tree carver... call me what you like, what I love to do is make wood come to life! Born and raised in Liverpool, I moved to Wrexham and graduated as an illustrator, specialising in children's books.

My career then changed drastically when I started working as a tree surgeon! Seeing somebody carving with the chainsaw quickly made me realise the potential, and taking up this exciting art form, I quickly turned it in to an opportunity to make a living.

10 years on, having competed in carving competitions around the world, I am now regarded by many as one of the best in the world. My commissions have ranged from small scale sculptures for gardens to large outdoor sculptures for organisations such as the forestry commission. The chainsaw produces exciting textures, and is a very expressive tool for shaping wood quickly. I love the fact that such delicate and beautiful forms can be created with such a destructive and violent tool.
